FAMILY RELATIONS   December11, 2021 12 Divorce  ___ Jocelynn Linton           Hello again, and welcome back! I regret to inform all of you that this will be my last blog for a little while. The knowledge and insight that I have gained on family and marriage this last semester has been irreplaceable, and I have come to understand so much more. Many people (myself included before this course) often just assume that good incorrect information on families is readily available. However many of the stats are skewed, and the true facts are either hidden or not shared. I have loved every bit of insight and experience that my professor was so willing to share with us this semester. I hope that all of you have gained something from reading these blogs and have enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed writing them.           This week we only had one day of in class discussion which was di...

Parenting Skills

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   December 4, 2021 11 Parenting Skills ___ Jocelynn Linton Welcome back everyone! Today we will be discussing parenting skills as well as how much they have changed over the years. We will also be taking a look at how these new and modern parenting techniques are negatively affecting the children.            In the past, parents were often much sterner and strict with their children. Now days, these parenting approaches can seem out of date and even cruel or unfair. Often children would address their fathers as sir, and mom‘s word was gospel. In today's world there is so much information and instructions on how you should raise your children and what should not be done. Everywhere you look, people are desperately waiting to throw in their two cents and parenting advice. Unfortunately many new parents are choosing their parenting styles based on trends and popular opinions.    ...

Fatherhood and Finance

FAMILY RELATIONS   NOVEMBER 27, 2021 10 Fatherhood and Finance ___ Jocelynn Linton Hello friends! I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend! Thanksgiving is a wonderful time where we have the opportunity to appreciate our families as well as everything else that we have been blessed with. It is a time when we can draw closer to one another and gain a deeper appreciation for the roles that each member in the family plays. Today we are going to be talking specifically about fathers and the different roles that they play in the family. One of these roles deals with the father being the family unit’s primary provider. That is where the financial aspect comes in. As you read this article, I would like you to think back on your father, or any positive father figure that you had in your life who changed it for the better. You can probably think of many instances where you needed the support and care that only a father could have provided. Hopefully, most of you were lucky...

Communication

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   NOVEMBER 20, 2021 09 Communication ___ Jocelynn Linton Welcome back! Today we are talking about one of the most important aspects to a successful and long lasting relationship. There is almost nothing more detrimental to relationships than a lack of communication. I'd like to go over two things today in regards to proper communication. Firstly, why it is so important, and secondly, five effective ways to go about communicating successfully. First, the importance of communication. Let’s go into why communication is so essential to every aspect of our lives. Everything we do and every interaction we have relies on good communication. Whether that’s verbal communication, or non verbal. Such as body language. People have relied on these skills for as long as we’ve been on earth. However in recent years people have been getting worse and worse at exercising these. Technology has made our natural habits become difficult and awkward for many people. Often, couple...

Family Stress

FAMILY RELATIONS   NOVEMBER 13, 2021 08 Family Stress ___ Jocelynn Linton Hello again everybody! And welcome back to the weekly blog. Today we are going to be talking about different stressors in the family. Families are one of the most amazing things that we have on this earth. They are our support system. They are there when no one else is. Of course, not all of our family is biological. Even though families are great, no family comes without hardship or difficulty. Every family goes through different experiences that shape and grow them in different ways. The thing that makes them different is how they react to those experiences. These situations can be known as stressors, or in more extreme cases, crises. Whenever one of these events occurs, there are usually two different ways people react. It either pulls them apart, or draws them closer together. Whether this be divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job, etc. A strong family can pull through anything. And, if they ...

Marital Intimacy

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   NOVEMBER 6, 2021 07 Marital Intimacy  ___ Jocelynn Linton Welcome back to my blog! I hope all of you have had a wonderful week! I am very excited to talk about today’s topic, because it is something that I am learning more and more about every day. Today’s topic is marital intimacy. This is something that I feel like everyone, whether they’re single, dating or married, can learn more about. Marital intimacy is something that is not talked about very often, and can be considered somewhat of a taboo subject. The world portrays sex and marriage as something completely different from what it actually is. Not only do we need to correctly educate ourselves from reliable sources, but we need to make sure that we are able to openly talk about it in a respectful and correct way. We covered so many interesting things in class this week, that I could go on and on. But not very many people have that much time, so I will try to condense into a few thoughts the ove...

Marriage Expectations

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 30, 2021 06 Marriage Expectations ___ Jocelynn Linton Hello Everybody! Today’s topic is…marriage! Just like every single other topic in today’s world, the views on marriage are very different nowadays than they have been in the past. People are getting married less, married for different reasons, and divorce rates are higher than ever before. Why do people get married? In the past, people married for money, political advantage, family alliances or security. Now days, things are very different. Most of the time, people marry for love and intimacy. Intimacy is so essential and important to our mental and emotional health. When you are marrying someone, you are binding yourself to them. This is a very beautiful and sacred union that often comes with many hopes and expectations. It is very important to make sure that all these expectations are realistic and reasonable. Marriage is not easy, and unfortunately many people do not realize that not everythi...

Dating Culture

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 23, 2021 05 Dating Culture ___ Jocelynn Linton Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a great week. I am very excited about writing today’s blog because it is a topic that I have always found very fascinating. In today’s world, we are seeing constant change. One of these changes has been the dating culture. Over the past 50 years the definition of dating has drastically transformed.  Dating used to be a planned activity where you got to know another individual. Usually in a group setting. “The idea of the perfect first date has changed a lot in 50 years. "The date usually happened in a public place, among other teens; there was lots of talking to get to know each other; and if there was any money spent, the guy paid (Greenwald, 2019).” Now days, things are very different. Back then, you had to actually meet someone and talk to them before you could get their number or even ask them out. Today, there are so many ways to connect with people. ...

Gender and the Family

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 16, 2021 04 Gender and the Family ___ Jocelynn Linton This week in Family Relations, we covered a topic that is quite a difficult topic in today’s world. It was Gender in Families. Since the very beginning of time, there has been a universally understood definition of gender. Male, and Female, boy and girl. It was understood that there were only two genders. Now days, these definitions have been blurred and in many cases even erased. The gender norms that have existed in our society for so long are now under attack. What truly differentiates a male and female, well…besides the obvious, there are many differences between males and females, not only physically, but psychologically and mentally as well. We refer to these differences as gender-typical behaviors. Women tend to be more emotional and rely heavily on verbal communication, whereas men tend to be more physical and less rational. When women are angry, they often use words and emotions as a me...

Family Experiences

Image
FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 9, 2021 03 Family Experiences ___ Jocelynn Linton Hello, hello again lovelies! This week, my family relations class covered a very interesting topic. We talked about different classes in America. The question posed was, “Is there a caste system in the states?”  While we may not have one set in stone, is there one ingrained in the subconscious of every US citizen? An interesting idea. Many people born into wealthy circumstances are often blessed with more connections and opportunity simply because of their origins. In contrast, those born into poorer circumstances find it difficult to rise above their surroundings. I am NOT saying that it is not possible, or that it hasn’t been done.  For class I had the opportunity to watch a few episodes of the series People Like Us . THey followed the heartbreaking story of a mother named Tammy. Tammy lived in the humblest of circumstances with her four children. They had a small trailer surrounded by t...
