I am very excited about writing today’s blog because it is a topic that I have always found very fascinating. In today’s world, we are seeing constant change. One of these changes has been the dating culture. Over the past 50 years the definition of dating has drastically transformed.  Dating used to be a planned activity where you got to know another individual. Usually in a group setting. “The idea of the perfect first date has changed a lot in 50 years. "The date usually happened in a public place, among other teens; there was lots of talking to get to know each other; and if there was any money spent, the guy paid (Greenwald, 2019).” Now days, things are very different. It was Gender in Families. Since the very beginning of time, there has been a universally understood definition of gender. Male, and Female, boy and girl. It was understood that there were only two genders. Now days, these definitions have been blurred and in many cases even erased. The gender norms that have existed in our society for so long are now under attack. What truly differentiates a male and female, well…besides the obvious, there are many differences between males and females, not only physically, but psychologically and mentally as well. We refer to these differences as gender-typical behaviors. Women tend to be more emotional and rely heavily on verbal communication, whereas men tend to be more physical and less rational.   FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 9, 2021 03 Family Experiences ___ Jocelynn Linton Hello, hello again lovelies! This week, my family relations class covered a very interesting topic. We talked about different classes in America. The question posed was, “Is there a caste system in the states?”  While we may not have one set in stone, is there one ingrained in the subconscious of every US citizen? An interesting idea. Many people born into wealthy circumstances are often blessed with more connections and opportunity simply because of their origins. In contrast, those born into poorer circumstances find it difficult to rise above their surroundings. I am NOT saying that it is not possible, or that it hasn’t been done.  For class I had the opportunity to watch a few episodes of the series People Like Us .   FAMILY RELATIONS   OCTOBER 1, 2021 02 Boundaries in the Home ___ Jocelynn Linton The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines boundaries as, “unofficial rules about what should not be done : limits that define acceptable behavior (Webster).” In almost any family, no matter where you are, there are boundaries and rules, both spoken and unspoken. These are what govern a family and ensure order and respect. Recently, my Family relations class had a discussion on the different types of boundaries that are set by families. My professor used the analogy of three houses. The first house had a brick wall surrounding it. It’s lawn was immaculate to the point of discomfort. With chain link fences and barbed wire. Barred windows and bullet proof glass. The second house was in complete disarray. There was a half finished lopsided fence, the door was wide open, no windows and a messy yard. FAMILY RELATIONS   SEPTEMBER 25, 2021 01 Changes in the Family ___ Jocelynn Linton Family. What is family? Traditionally, a family is defined as a married man and woman and their children. However, in recent years the worldly views on family have shifted drastically. Having both parents in the home is becoming increasingly less common, divorce rates are on the rise, and an alarming amount of people are advocating for the complete deconstruction of the family structure. All of these changes have been proven to have adverse and lasting effects on the children being reared in these less than ideal conditions. While children from all different types of family backgrounds have the potential to succeed, studies have shown that a child raised in an intact biological family, or IBF, have better mental health, form better relationships, and a much higher level of perceived safety and security in the home ("New Family").
